Welcome to Canadian Winter November.  For many, November marks the countdown to December holidays and for others the start of Movember a month filled with Lip Sweaters-a-plenty.  I, like many men have participated before and will participate again but recognize that the message and purpose of Movember has changed since its inception in 1999.

For many, Movember was a month dedicated to tackling men’s cancers.  When most people think of Movember they think of prostate cancer a disease that affects 1 in 7 men in their lifetime.  Today however, it has grown to bring awareness around testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

This year I discovered that there are many different options available to support the campaign.  Instead of hosting an event or growing a ‘mo one can also choose to move. The campaign has grown from awareness to now encouraging healthy habits for those who participate.  The target is to get people to run or walk 60 kilometers in the month to represent the 60 men we lose to suicide each hour. The Men at Defy joined in the cause for that reason alone.  We all wanted to participate for the promotion of healthy movement in the work that we do, the positive messages we share about life balance and to tackle the huge problem of men’s mental health and suicidality.
