reach, lift and train without pain

shoulder pain physiotherapy in guelph, sorted out.

Shoulders are patient until they are not. Most people push through the pinching and clicking for months, then find they cannot sleep on that side or lift overhead at all.

At Defy Sports Performance & Physiotherapy in Guelph, we find what your shoulder is actually missing and rebuild it.

what is causing your shoulder pain?

shoulders respond well to the right loading.

Rotator cuff irritation, tendon pain, impingement, frozen shoulder, labral issues and neck-related pain can all feel similar from the outside. What separates them is how they behave under load, through range, and over time, which is exactly what a good assessment looks at.

We test strength through the cuff and scapular muscles, look at overhead and behind-the-back range, and check the neck and mid back because they change how the shoulder moves. We also look at what you are asking the shoulder to do at work, in the gym or in your sport.

Treatment starts with calming the irritated tissue and restoring range you can use. Then we load it. Progressive strength for the cuff and upper back, control through overhead positions, and a return to pressing, pulling, throwing or sleeping through the night without waking up.

the defy app

the momentum of between session interaction.

Shoulder rehab lives or dies on execution. Small changes in how you hold a dumbbell or where you feel an exercise make a real difference. Through our app you can send a video, get feedback on your form, and have your program adjusted without waiting a week.

Because that support continues between visits, we use in-person sessions for what they are best at: assessment, hands-on treatment when appropriate, and objective testing that shows how your strength and range are changing.

You get a clinician who is in your corner during the week, not only in the room. This is physiotherapy in Guelph designed for people with full schedules.

The Consultation Call is a chance to talk through your shoulder, ask questions, and decide together whether this is the right fit.

Not usually, and even when there is a tear it does not automatically mean surgery. Many cuff tears respond very well to progressive strengthening. Your assessment tells us how much strength and range you have to work with, which matters more than a scan.

Irritated shoulder tissue often gets grumpy in positions you hold for hours, and sleeping on that side compresses it. We give you position and pillow strategies to get through the night while we settle the underlying irritation.

In most cases yes, with adjustments. We modify range, grip, tempo or load so you keep training while the shoulder settles. Stopping everything usually costs you strength you will need later.

This is likely a good fit if you:

  • Have shoulder pain with overhead reaching, pressing, pulling or sleeping
  • Have had it for weeks or months and it is not improving on its own
  • Want to return to your sport, gym or job without flare-ups
  • Value clear guidance and objective testing over generic exercise sheets

Message your physiotherapist through the app and send a video. We adjust the angle, range or load so you are working the right tissue without provoking it. You do not have to wait for your next visit.

Tendon and cuff issues typically need eight to twelve weeks of consistent loading to change meaningfully, though most people feel better well before that. Frozen shoulder follows a longer course and we will be upfront about the timeline.

No. We work with anyone who wants their shoulder to do more than it does now, whether that is lifting a child, returning to overhead work, or getting back on the field.

stories from our clients

“I have been doing physio with Matt on my ankle, which has given me trouble consistently for years. It rolls very easily, and I’ve suffered many sprains over the years. In the last four weeks, we have massively improved both strength and stability, and my ankle hasn’t felt as good in years. With Matt’s help, we hit all the goals in our plan, and today I started CrossFit, which is huge for me. Thanks to Matt and Defy for a job well done.”

“I’ve always enjoyed running—it’s good for the soul. This past year, I decided I would run a marathon. I wanted to do it right, understand the training process and, of course, get to the start line injury-free. Jared has been an unreal coach who has kept me accountable and motivated throughout the training blocks. He allowed me to gain the self-confidence to take on a marathon—or two—and crush some goals.”

Physiotherapy
“I have worked with Laura and Alexie and love them both. Laura went into detail about what the problem was and took a holistic approach. Over time, she has helped me improve my mobility. Alexie is so upbeat. She focuses on what my issues are that day and gives me tips to do at home. I have recommended them to my family—my husband and daughter.”

“Dr. Dominika Jamnicky is an amazing chiropractor. I have been training for a triathlon and dealing with some back and knee issues. She has helped so much with figuring out issues with my body and bike setup. I can’t recommend her enough, especially if you are an athlete!”
